Hints for Java
For operating the PlayCatan Access Software, Java 1.7 or newer is required. According to our experience, our software runs more stable when using Oracle Java instead of OpenJDK.
To install the Java Runtime Environment or to update it after installation, please use the package management application that was installed with your Linux distribution.
If you are using Ubuntu, you will first need to add a package repository to install Oracle Java 7. Please proceed as follows:
- sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
- sudo apt-get update
- sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer
To check your Java version, please type “java -version” in a terminal window. In case you have installed several Java versions in a parallel fashion, you have to pre-select Java 1.7 as the version to be used.
In Ubuntu, you can achieve this via "sudo update-alternatives --config java".
Installing and Running
Please unpack the archive into a folder where you have full write privileges at all times. You may use, for example, your home directory or also your desktop.
Inside the folder "PlayCatan," please run the script "Create-Desktop-Icon.sh". This will create an icon named "PlayCatan" on your desktop. To run the PlayCatan Access Software, please activate this icon (usually by double-clicking on it).
In case your Linux distribution is not compatible with the created desktop link, please activate the PlayCatan Access Software via the “PlayCatanStarter.sh” script, e.g., by double-clicking it or by entering "./PlayCatanStarter.sh" in a terminal window.
Hints for Playing in Full Screen Mode
So far, full-screen operation could not be tested successfully for Linux. However, when using Gnome, the panels (main menu bar above, tray below) can be hidden using the function “Hide - Show Buttons,” which – for a screen resolution of 1024x768 – also enables full-screen gaming in the 1024x768 windowed mode.
