In exchange for coins and resources, the merchant will trade all kinds of interesting goods (see Coin Trader).
As a new citizen, your avatar is provided with simple level 2 clothing (citizens without a Premium account always wear level 1 clothing). You can upgrade your avatar's clothing to a magnificent garment, all the way up to level 15. The clothing represents your avatar in your fellow citizens' chat windows and in the games. Therefore, your avatar's clothing is also a sign of your success on PlayCatan. The better your avatar's clothing, the more attentively are you treated at the Bank, and if your avatar has at least clothing level 8, you can trade resources at a better rate. To upgrade your clothing, you have to visit the General Store.
A clothing level expires 35 days after its purchase (around 12 o'clock CET of the next day), meaning that the clothing is downgraded by 1 level, and the title is adjusted accordingly. The expiration date of your clothing level is displayed in your avatar info windows. In the General Store you can choose whether to repair the current level (costs correspond to those of the current level) or upgrade your clothing (costs correspond to the next higher level). If you only repair the current level, another 35 days are added to its expiration date. You can make a repair at any time. If your clothing has already reached the highest level, you can only repair it.
Important: When you upgrade to a higher level, its time until expiration is always set to 35 days, even if the current level hasn't expired yet.
As a new citizen, you start without a house. If you have a Standard or Plus Account, however, you can build your own house. Afterwards, you can upgrade this small shack to a magnificent residence with its own production building, all the way up to level 15. To build or upgrade your house, visit the General Store. 35 days after its purchase, a house level expires (around 12 o'clock CET of the next day), meaning that the house is downgraded by 1 level, and the title is adjusted accordingly. The expiration date of your house level is displayed in your avatar info windows.. In the General Store you can choose whether to repair the current level (costs correspond to those of the current level) or upgrade your house (costs correspond to the next higher level). If you only repair the current level, another 35 days are added to its expiration date. You can make a repair at any time. If your house has already reached the highest level, you can only repair it.
When you upgrade to a higher level, its time until expiration is always set to 35 days, even if the current level hasn't expired yet. If, due to downgrading, there is not enough room to store the accumulated resources, the resources are not removed; however, new resources are not added until sufficient storage space is available again. In each city, 150 building sites for houses are displayed in the city layout. If all sites are occupied, more houses can be built in that city, but they are not visible in the city layout! The number of houses already built can be viewed in the "Info About the Cities" list in the Town Hall.
If you are not owning a house, you can only have 10 resources. If you have a level 1 house, you can store a maximum of 15 resources, meaning that your status indicator will never show more than 15 resources. If your storeroom is full and you don't spend resources, all resources received via daily distribution or participation in games are lost. In this case, the number of resources you own is displayed in red. After you have upgraded your house to level 2, it can already store 20 resources. Every house can have a garden.
The merchant also offers many things you can embellish your property with. Depending on the current season (summer or winter period), you can choose between trees, flowers, and objects such as hedges or a park bench. Once you have bought them, plants lasts 35 days and objects / trees last 70 days.
|Flower||Tree / Object|
|Life span||35 days||70 days|
In order to embellish your garden, click on the “Garden” button in the Merchant menu. A window opens showing your property. To switch back and forth between the three item groups "Trees," "Flowers," and "Other," click on the respective buttons. To scroll through these groups' items, use the arrow buttons.
Your credit and the costs of the currently placed items are shown on the left side. A total of 30 items may be accommodated. To select the desired item, click on it. When you move the cursor around within your property (delimited by the white rectangle), the selected item sticks to the cursor and can thus be placed on the desired spot.
For technical reasons, plants and objects cannot be placed in the area in the center of the property. This area appears shaded. In addition, upgrading your house (and thus making it bigger) can cause garden objects in the backyard to be gradually covered by the house.
Every PlayCatan premium member can buy a pet. Once purchased, the pet will follow you everywhere. It is displayed not only when you are in the city layout but also when you are in a game (except for the Card Game), where it visibly shares your emotions.
A pet only lives for 112 days.
