PlayCatan Gamer Information

There is a gamer information available for every active member on PlayCatan, which shows the current ELO values (premium users only) and contains links to the fellow players of this member and the monthly rankings he / she had participate. The quota is the number of points the player has earned (see below) divided by the number of games played.

Monthly and Annual Rankings (Standard Ranking)

The points received for each game is based upon the ranking position and the number of the players. These points are then entered into the Monthly Lists.

Ranking Position Number of Players
2 3 4 5 6
1st Place 5 5,5 5,7 5,8 5,9
2nd Place 1 2,5 3,3 3,8 4,2
3rd Place - 1 2,1 2,8 3,3
4th Place - - 0,9 1,8 2,4
5th Place - - - 0,8 1,5
6th Place - - - - 0,7

In case of a tie, the points are distributed among the respective ranking positions.

In each city, there is a Monthly List for each game group. To get on the list, you must have played at least 7 games. The following formula is used to determine the score (exceptions: The Rivals for Catan, Team Games, Catan - The Card Game (classic) - see below):

The Monthly Lists for the Catan games are subdivided into

  • Base Game
  • Scenarios (without Cities & Knights) and
  • Cities & Knights (including scenarios with Cities & Knights).

Furthermore, there are Monthly Lists for the following games:

  • MultiCatan
  • Domaine
  • Elasund
  • Realm of the Desert Sons
  • Hoity Toity
  • Struggle for Catan
  • Exploreres & Pirates

Please note:

If you want to appear on the Monthly Lists, the number of games you finished as a substitute player must not exceed the number of games you finished normally. Further information on this topic can be found in the chapter "Game Statistics."

The monthly winners receive 2 gold, and the players occupying places 2-5 receive 1 gold each. This applies only to Plus Account holders. The gold for winners who do not have a Plus Account goes into the city's treasury (because only Plus Account holders have use for gold). In addition, for each game group there is an Open List that extends across cities. The players on this list do not receive gold.

Players with equal scores share the same position in the ranking lists; the following positions are skipped.

Example:

Vincent and Siegfried have the same score. Both get place 1. Place 2 is skipped; the next player occupies place 3.

At the end of the year, an annual score is calculated for each game group and each city. The annual score consists of the sum of the four best monthly scores (ranking position). Missing monthly scores – for example, if a player only has scores for 2 months – are substituted for place # 150. Only players who still have a Premium Account at the time of the annual score are considered (exception: Base Game).

There are three different places where you can access the ranking lists for the games:

  1. In the statistics area of this website.
  2. In your own house or in the Hostel, by clicking on the bookshelf. Here you find a personal overview for all monthly lists.
  3. In the Taverns, via the posters next to the door.

Note: The aforementioned ranking applies since March 2008. Click here to read more about the old ranking that applied before.

ELO Lists for the Board Games

In addition to the normal monthly ranking, a permanent ELO List that extends across cities was implemented at the end of January 2009 for users with a premium account. The previous ranking (see above) continues without changes. No gold is awarded for ELO Lists. The layout of the lists corresponds to the existing Monthly Lists. All lists can be accessed in the statistics area at www.playcatan.com under the topic “ELO Lists.”

Unlike in the normal ranking, the playing skills of the participating players are included in the calculation. Winning against a player whose ELO ranking is lower than yours earns you fewer points than winning against a player whose ELO ranking is higher than yours. To some degree, the ELO ranking therefore represents a player's playing skills. ELO was first developed for chess and is typically used in 2-player games. For PlayCatan, the ELO system has been modified to make it work also for games with more than 2 players, such as the Catan Board Game. Information on the classic ELO ranking can be found here.

On each list, each player has an individual ELO ranking. The starting value is 1,000. Free Account users do not get a ranking. If a Free Account user participates in a game (important only for the Base Game), he is not considered for the calculation.

After a game has concluded, the rankings are calculated based on side-by-side comparisons between the players. This means that in a 4-player game (player A, player B, player C, and player D) the calculation is performed as if the players had competed against each other in pairs. For this purpose, the ELO formula is used to calculate the results for the combinations AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, and CD (always taking into account the perspective of both players). The sum of a player’s individual rankings is added to, or subtracted from, his or her previous ELO ranking.

If a player abandons a game and another player finishes the game in his or her place, both players are excluded from the calculation, because in this case it is not possible to calculate correct ELO values for these players. The ELO rankings for the remaining players is calculated as described below. If only one of the initial players is left, no ELO calculation takes place for this game.

This is how the formula looks:

  • Victory = 1 (if player a wins)
  • Victory = 0 (if player a loses)
  • Victory = 0.5 (in case of a tie)

This implies that in a 2-player game, you can win or lose 8 points at most. In a 4-player game, you could win or lose 24 points, because you are compared with two more players.

Example:

Place Player ELO
1 A 1000
2 B 800
3 C 1200

Player A vs. B (+2) and C (+6). A receives +8 points for his ELO ranking. Player B vs. A (-2) and C (+7). B receives +5 points because he has won against the strong player C, even though he has lost against A. C fares comparatively badly; he loses 13 points off his ELO ranking.

ELO Ranking for Teamplay Games

Each player has a consecutive ELO value for all team games. At the beginning, this value is 1,000.

To calculate a game result, a team ELO value is determined. This value corresponds to the ELO of the team member with the higher ELO value.

Example:

Team A - Player 1: 800 ELO
Team A - Player 2: 1,200 ELO
Team B - Player 1: 1,000 ELO
Team B - Player 2: 1,100 ELO

Team A thus has a team ELO value of 1,200 and team B a team ELO value of 1,100. Both ELO values are now incorporated into the given formula, and the result is subtracted from, or added to, the individual values of the players.

If team A wins, the following results are obtained:

Team A - Player 1: 811 ELO (+11)
Team A - Player 2: 1,211 ELO (+11)
Team B - Player 1: 989 ELO (-11)
Team B - Player 2: 1,089 ELO (-11)

ELO Ranking for "The Rivals for Catan"

An ELO ranking is used for "The Rivals for Catan." There are separate lists for Theme Games, the Duel, and the Tournament Game. The Introductory Game is meant for learning purposes and, therefore, has no list.

With ELO ranking, the score obtained for victory depends on the opponent’s ranking position. Victories over stronger opponents are worth more than victories over weaker opponents. Therefore, in contrast to the other games, there is a permanent Annual ELO List for "The Rivals for Catan."

  • Victory = 1 (if player a wins)
  • Victory = 0 (if player a loses)
  • Victory = 0.5 (in case of a tie)

Individual ELO Ranking is the value by which the previous ELO value is being changed.

1. Monthly List

At the beginning of the month, each player is set to 1,000 points, independent from his or her position in the Annual List. For calculations performed during the course of the month, the usual ELO formula is applied. To get on the Monthly List, you must have played at least 7 games during the corresponding month.

2. Annual List

Each player starts out with 1,000 points. Unlike the Monthly List, the Annual List is continuous. Players who haven't played for more than 60 days are no longer shown on the list. However, when they resume playing, they continue with their old scores.

ELO Ranking for the Classic Card Game

An ELO ranking is used for the classic Card Game (in the "Knight of the Mill" Tavern). The score for victory thus depends on the opponent’s ranking position. Victories over stronger opponents are worth more than victories over weaker opponents. Therefore, in contrast to the other games, there is a permanent Annual ELO List for the classic Card Game.

  • Victory = 1 (if player a wins)
  • Victory = 0 (if player a loses)
  • Victory = 0.5 (in case of a tie)

Individual ELO Ranking is the value by which the previous ELO value is being changed.
