The Struggle for Catan
Welcome to "The Struggle for Catan!" - the fast card game in the world of Catan.

In The Struggle for Catan, you build roads, settlements, cities, and knights, just as you would do in the Catan Board Game. There are no game pieces and no game board, though. Everything you build exists only in the form of cards, which, in the online game, are displayed next to your character.
In the example above, the number on the right indicates how many building object cards you have and of which type. In this case, it would be 3 roads,1 settlement, and 1 knight. The number on the left informs you how many victory points the cards are worth.
Like in the Board Game, it is the accumulation of victory points that leads to victory in The Struggle for Catan. You need exactly 10 victory points to win the game. During your turn, you may first trade resources and then "build" cards.
You start the game with 3 random resources. At the end of each of your turns, you automatically receive at least 2 more resources.
You may trade a card from your resource supply (1) either with the market (2), the draw stack (3), or an opponent. To trade with the market or the draw stack, click on a card in your resource supply and draw it onto the desired card of the market or onto the draw stack.
To trade with an opponent, click on the trade symbol next to his avatar. The opponent's face-down hand of cards appears. Click on one of the cards, and it goes to you resource supply. At the end of your trade phase at the latest, you must return any card of your choice to the opponent (draw the card onto the opponent's card area).
You may only trade with the market or the opponent, if you own at least 1 street. Without a street you may ohne trade with the draw stack.
During the game, the card supply display informs you about the costs of the building objects you already know from the Board Game: road (1), settlement (2), city (3), and knight (4) as well as about the number of available cards. The 6 city expansions (5) that allow you to improve your cities are new.
The number of cities available are dependent of the actual player and represents the number of settlements this player has (as you need a settlement for upgrading it to a city). There is no limitiation for upgrading settlements to cities.
After you have traded the allowed number of resources, the building menu (see below) is displayed automatically. Objects you can build are marked with a small hammer symbol. In the building menu below, the hammer indicates that you can build a knight.
To build, first click on the respective building object and then on the large hammer symbol (1). The building costs are paid automatically, and the newly built card is displayed next to your avatar.
You may build each building object only once during your turn. When you build, you may replace 1 resource with 3 different resources of one type as you like. The program will display this opportunity, if a trade is possible and will offer a possible selection of cards. You can still change this selection by clicking on the cards.
Roads and Knights
|Knights are worth victory points and increase the number of resources you receive at the end of your turn. For each odd-numbered knight you receive 1 additional resource. Each even-numbered knight is worth 1 victory point.
Example: If you have 3 knights knight 1 and knight 3 each earns you 1 additional resource at the end of your turn, while knight 2 is worth 1 victory point.
|Roads are worth victory points and increase the number of resources you may trade during your turn. For each odd-numbered road, you may trade 1 card. Each even-numbered road is worth 1 victory point.
Example: If you have 5 roads you may trade 1 resource each for road 1, 3, and 5, respectively; road 2 and 4 together are worth 2 victory points.
If a player builds a knight or a road and the supply is depleted, he receives a knight or a road from the player next to him in the direction of the arrow on the destiny card.
Settlements and Cities
|At the beginning of the game, each player has one settlement. Each settlement is worth 1 victory point. When you build a settlement, you may reverse the direction of the arrow on the destiny card and thus change the direction in which roads and knights are "stolen." If you want to keep the current direction of the destiny card, just select the same direction as before.|
|If you have paid the building costs for 1 city, one of your settlements is turned so that its city side faces up. If you don't have a settlement, you can't build a city. A city is worth 2 victory points. Building a city triggers an event - either a Market Day or a Brigand Attack.
Market Day: The cards of the market are exchanged.
Brigand Attack: Players who have more than 7 resources cards discard all cards in excess of 7. Afterwards, the destiny card is flipped.
You may expand each of your cities by means of one building. A city with a city expansion is worth at least 3 victory points and provides you with a particular advantage:
|Castle: If you have 3 or fewer roads, a road may not be taken away from you.|
|Church: If you only have 1 knight, it is protected and may not be taken away from you.|
|Town Hall: If you build the Town Hall, you must pay an additional 2 ore. A city with a Town Hall provides 4 victory points.|
|Library: When you trade with an opponent, you may draw 1 resource card from his face-up hand (1x per turn).|
|University: When building, you may replace 1 of the required resource cards with a different type of resource (1x per turn).|
|Merchant Guild: Draw 1 resource card from an opponent whose victory point count is greater or equal to yours (1x per turn).|
Display of Actions
On the right-hand side of the screen, icons are depicted that inform you about how many resources you may trade during your turn and how many resources you will receive after you end your turn.
Actions you may perform thanks to certain city expansions such as the Merchant Guild are also indicated in this area. On the rectangular shaped icons can be clicked in order to activate the action.
