Official Tournaments

Every year, 6 official tournaments are held, of which 4 are board game tournaments and 2 are The Rivals for Catan tournaments. These games take place exclusively in the "Official Tournaments" area!

The tournament weekends are held Friday through Monday (starting and ending at 10 a.m. CET).

A player's score is determined by an ELO based ranking. An ELO based ranking emphasizes the participants' playing skills, which fosters stronger competition and consequently leads to a more exciting tournament. Players interested in learning more about the ranking mode can find a detailed explanation below.

Games not finished

As soon as a player has failed to finish 3 games, he is barred from the tournament and his ranking in this tournament is removed. If a player abandons a game and another player finishes the game in his place, both players are excluded from the calculation.

The reason is that, in this case, it is not possible to calculate correct ELO values for these players because they didn't complete the game. The ELO rankings of the remaining players are calculated as described below. If only one of the initial players is left, no ELO calculation takes place for this game. Therefore, if a player does not come back, it usually makes more sense to abort a game by mutual agreement.

Charts

Each player who has participated in at least one game is entered in the list. Players who failed to finish 3 games in a tournament no longer appear in the chart. The tournament ELO value determines a player's rank (higher = better). There is no tie breaker. At the end of the tournament, players with identical tournament ELO values occupy the same rank.

At the end of a tournament, gold is distributed as follows:

Rank Gold
1-10 3
11-25 2
26-50 1

In addition to gold, the best players are awarded medals. Different medals are available for Rivals of Catan and board game tournaments, which are distributed anew after each tournament. The top 2% of the ranking list receive a gold medal, the top 4% receive a silver medal, and the top 8% receive a bronze medal (of course, only if they haven't received a better medal yet). Should there be fewer than 50 participants, only the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places receive the corresponding medals.

ELO Ranking Mechanism

Each player has a tournament ELO value and a playing skills value.

  • At the beginning of a tournament, each player has a tournament ELO value of 1,000.
  • During the first two tournament days, a player's playing skills are equivalent to the highest ELO values already obtained by him during regular online play for the groups of games played during the tournament. On the third day, his playing skills are equivalent to his tournament ELO value. If a player doesn't have an ELO value for any of the groups of games played during the tournament, the value "1,000" is used.

Example: In a board game tournament, Seafarers and Cities & Knights scenarios are played. Player X has an ELO value of 960 for Seafarers and an ELO value of 1,020 for Cities & Knights. Therefore, the player's playing skills value in this tournament is 1,020.

Besides the tournament ranking the games played in the tournaments are also taken into account for the regular ELO ranking and the monthly score. In these cases, the respective scoring mechanisms are used.

The playing skills for Rivals for Catan tournaments refer to the permanent ELO value - not to the ELO value from the monthly list. For board games there is only one permanent ELO value, which is also used as the playing skills value for the tournament. During a tournament, a player's playing skills value is redefined at the beginning of each game. Therefore, the playing skills value may change during the tournament if the ELO values it is based on have changed.

Board Game Tournaments

If more than 2 players have participated in a game, after the conclusion of the game the rankings are calculated based on side-by-side comparisons between the players.

This means that in a 4-player game (player A, player B, player C, and player D) the calculation is performed as if the players had competed against each other in pairs. For this purpose, the ELO formula is used to calculate the results for the combinations AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, and CD (always taking into account the perspective of both players). The sum of a player’s individual rankings is added to, or subtracted from, his previous tournament ELO value.

It is important to note that instead of the tournament ELO value the opponent's playing skills are considered.

Let's assume that we want to calculate player A's individual ELO ranking in a combination of player A and player B. To do so, we use A's current tournament ELO value and B's playing skills value. The loss of symmetry is acceptable in this case.

This is how the corresponding formula looks:

Rivals for Catan Tournaments

In a Rivals for Catan tournament with only 2 players per each game, the following formula is used:

Giving Up

As during regular online play, you may give up a Rivals for Catan game before it ends. If both players agree, the game counts as a win for the player in the lead.
