Oceania - Instructions

"Oceania" is a simplified version of the board game "Entdecker". The goal is to explore all all unknown fields of the game board and discover islands as big as possible.

How to Play

Use the mouse for moving the ship to a discovered field or a space at the margin. Then draw a sea tile from the stack. Now use the mouse to move this tile to a field that is not discovered yet. The field must of course be adjacent to the field with the ship.

If there are multiple possibilities for placing the tile, you have free choice. An arrow icon appears at the tile, so you can turn it.

Once you have found a suitable spot for the tile, click on the "Place" Icon that appears next to the tile. The ship automatically moves to the newly discovered field. Now you can place the ship again and discover the next sea tile.

Discard pileSometimes a tile won't fit - too bad! Then you have no choice but to put it on the discard pile.

You have a total of 32 sea tiles at your disposal. Whenever a single empty space is completely enclosed by tiles or a larger empty area is surrounded by land, the space is filled automatically. Thus you have a chance to discover all 35 spaces of the board. The game ends when you have used up your 32 sea tiles or when you have discovered all fields of the board.

Scoring

Only fully discovered islands are given a score; it is calculated by squaring the number of tiles that make up the entire island. The scores of all islands are added up. For each undiscovered field, 20 points are subtracted from the total score.

You begin the game with -700 points, since all 35 fields are as yet undiscovered. With each discovered field you work your way up. Don't be discouraged if you end your first few games with negative scores - with skillful placing and a little luck you can definitely reach 300 points and more!
